There are few things better than a GNO (Girls’ Night In). Sleepovers with my friends were truly my favourite thing growing up, and I promise you are never too old for a sleepover. There are countless fun things to do at a sleepover with your girls, but I think a girls’ night movie is a staple activity, whether it’s the main event of the night or just something in the background. Here at Knixteen we love a feel-good, girl power movie, so we compiled a list of our top eight favourite movies to watch with friends. Grab some popcorn, sit down, and read on!
13 Going On 30
This sleepover movie is a classic. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say something bad about this movie. Jennifer Garner plays a 13-year old girl who’s sick of life in junior high and the drama that comes with it. On her 13th birthday, she wishes she was an adult and suddenly her wish comes true – she wakes up as a 30-year old woman and has to play catch-up on the past 17 years of her life! It’ll make you laugh and cry all at once.
Beauty and the Beast
Disney has some of the best movies of all time, and the remakes of these classic films don’t disappoint. Our personal favourite right now is Beauty and the Beast. We love Emma Watson as Belle, and you’ll be amazed by the singing and special effects of this romantic movie!
The Parent Trap is one of those movies you could watch over and over and over again and never get tired of. This movie is the epitome of sisterly love – two identical twin sisters who were separated at birth due to their parents’ divorce discover they have another half when they both attend the same summer camp.
The twins become best friends and ultimately decide to swap locations, pretending to be the other sibling so they can get to know both their parents. Lindsay Lohan plays both twin sisters, which is not an easy thing to do, but she does it insanely well.
Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
This movie makes my heart feel all warm and fuzzy. You’ll watch it and instantly want to hug all your closest friends. Four best friends of different shapes and sizes find a pair of jeans that mysteriously fits each of them perfectly. The pants follow each of the girls during their separate summer adventures. You won’t be able to take your eyes away from the screen. (Bonus: You can watch Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2 after you finish the first!)
If you haven’t seen this movie, you’re seriously missing out. Anna Kendrick plays a college student who joins an acapella group at her new school. While the girls are all seriously different, they become a tight-knit family, fighting to be the best in college music competitions. You will literally pee your pants laughing during this movie, so maybe wear a pair of your Knixteens for this one!
Since we love talking about periods, we obviously have to talk about some of our favourite movies that highlight good old Aunt Flo! Here are our top 3:
If you haven’t seen Mean Girls, you seriously haven’t lived. Arguably one of the best chick flicks of all time, this movie has so many good quotes, but this one is easily our favourite (and not just because it’s about periods!).
Clueless is a slightly older movie (released in 1995), but is one of those timeless teen movies that never truly gets old. Also an extremely quotable movie, Alicia Silverstone’s character Cher channels every girl’s period ~mood~ when she claims she was late for class because she was “riding the crimson wave” and had to “haul ass to the ladies.’”
Carrie, played by Chloe Grace Moretz in the remake of the 1976 original, lives every girl’s worst nightmare when she gets her period in the middle of her shower in the girl’s locker room. Carrie is frequently targeted by bullies, and this incident is no exception. What follows will have you on the edge of your seat. Keep in mind that this one is a horror movie, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I personally think scary movies make for a great sleepover! So there you have it, the creme de la creme of sleepover movies.
