Celebrating Menstrual Health: Our Take on Menstrual Hygiene Day

On May 28, it’s Menstrual Health Day! Also known as Menstrual Hygiene Day, MHD raises awareness of the challenges women and girls face worldwide – and the solutions.

Breaking the silence

On May 28, it’s Menstrual Health Day! Naturally, this is very exciting for everyone at Knixteen, so we wanted to do something to celebrate. First, let’s get into what Menstrual Health Day (MHD) is.

Also known as World Menstrual Hygiene Day, MHD is a day of celebration to raise awareness about the challenges women and girls face around the world due to their menstrual cycles. It also highlights the solutions that address these challenges, such as proper menstrual hygiene management. MHD was initiated by WASH United, a non-profit organization working to end the global sanitation and hygiene crisis.

Today, Menstrual Health Day includes 350 events in 54 different countries worldwide. This includes educational events in schools, community rallies, concerts to raise awareness, advocacy workshops with governments and product donations. This campaign has grown a crazy amount over the past few years. If you want to know more about MHD, head to the website.

Health over hygiene

You might be wondering why we’ve chosen to replace the word “hygiene” in Menstrual Hygiene Day with the word “health.” Simply put, we never want to give the impression that periods are dirty. This is nothing against the original name, we just feel saying Menstrual Health Day is more inclusive and taboo-fighting.

So how exactly are we celebrating MHD? Glad you asked! We’re partnering with Period Movement, a group of young activists throughout the United States who believe menstrual care and education is a basic right. PERIOD was founded by Nadya Okamoto and Vincent Forand as high school students in 2014. They recognized that feminine hygiene products are not readily available to the people who need them most, and their efforts ensure everyone has access to these products.
