Your July Horoscopes: Summer Reading List

Check out these amazing YA books by Black authors to add to your summer reading list!
Just because school is over, doesn’t mean that the reading stops! If anything, it means more time to relax under a tree, by the pool, on the beach, or under the stars with a good book. When looking into books to read this summer, we recommend picking out YA by Black authors. But there are so, so, SO many amazing authors and stories, where to start? Check out your sign to see what the stars recommend! Happy reading! 


ARIES: March 21 - April 19

The Akata Witch Series by Nnedi Okorafor: This magical series follows American-born Nigerian Sunny Nwazue, who doesn’t fit in… only to learn she has supernatural powers. Inducted into a secret society, she also learns that she’s on a mission to stop the upcoming apocalypse. Now, we can’t say for suuuure if Sunny is an Aries, but only an Aries would take on that taskwhich makes this the perfect book to add to your summer reading list. 

TAURUS: April 20 - May 20

Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert: Taurus, you’re one of the biggest music lovers in the Zodiac, so settle into Yvonne’s story! She’s a high school violinist at a major fork in the road, with some pretty big decisions to navigate. No spoilers though! You’ll have to read to find out!

GEMINI: May 21 - June 20 

Oh My Gods by Alexandra Sheppard: Geminis, you know a thing or two about duality! So does the main character, Helen Thomas in the book Oh My Godswho is half teenage human, and half Greek god. Trying to keep your identity secret when your dad is Zeus is no easy task, but read on for the mythical adventure!

CANCER: June 21 - July 22

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson: A memoir written by activist and journalist George M. Johnson, this collection of personal essays is an emotional look at what it’s like to grow up black and queer. A must-read collection that touches on everything from toxic masculinity to bullies, it’s the perfect read for emotional Cancers this summer (and everyone else too!) 

LEO: July 23 - August 22

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson: After her financial aid to an expensive college falls through, Liz Lighty turns to running for Prom Queen in hopes of earning her school’s scholarship. With big plans to play in an orchestra and to study medicine, Liz thrusts herself into her high school’s spotlight (something you might relate to Leos!) to make her dreams come true. Read to learn if Liz snatches the crown (and finds love in the process) with this amazing book about identity and resilience. 

VIRGO: August 23 - September 22

Pride by Ibi Zoboi: Virgos, you are classy! So it makes sense you loooove classic books. But maybe you’ve noticed that a lot of these books and characters are white, so you’re looking for something that represents you a little more. Thankfully author Ibi Zoboi has reimagined the beloved classic Pride and Prejudice and made it Black. This Jane Austen remake is about to be your new fav! 

LIBRA: September 23 - October 22

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petris: The mushy romantics of the Zodiac, you deserve a beautiful love story this summer! Enter Audre and Mabelnew friends from different parts of the world who fall in love. This book is extra cool because it alternates between both their voices, and each chapter corresponds with the zodiac seasons. Grab some tissues and enjoy!

SCORPIO: October 23 - November 21 

Black Girl Unlimited By Echo Brown: If you love magic and mystery (which is a natural Scorpio trait of course), this semi-autobiographical book is for you! Move over Sabrina. Out of the way Harry Potter! Make room for Echo, the teenage witch. 

SAGITTARIUS: November 22 - December 21

Mare's War by Tanita S. Davis: Always one for an adventure and travel, you’ll zoom through this book about teens Octavia and Tali on a cross-country road trip with their grandmother. While on the drive, their grandmother tells the girls about growing up Black in the 1940s, and serving in the Women’s Army Corps. Talk about an adventure! It’s the perfect book to read during your own road-trip this summer. 

CAPRICORN: December 22 - January 19

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon: Regardless of whether you’ve seen the movie or not (it stars Queen Amandla Stenberg herself), the book it was based on is worth the read! Centering around Madeline who is kept in the house by her mom due to a supposed illness, follow Madeline's journey as she uncovers secrets about her identity. Any Cap will admire her strength and resilience, making it the perfect summer read for you! 

AQUARIUS: January 20 - February 18

The Sound of Stars by Alechia Dow: Aquarius, you already exist in another reality, so you might as well read about them too! In this sci-fi novel, Earth is run by aliens with only a few human survivors. For a tale on friendship, love, and alien invasion, get on board the UFO and start reading! 

PISCES: February 19 - March 20

A Phoenix First Must Burn: Sixteen Stories of Black Girl Magic, Resistance, and Hope edited by Patrice Caldwell: Pisces, as the last sign of the Zodiac you embody a bit of every sign that comes before you. You contain multitudes, just like this collection of short sci-fi stories. Each one of them is written by award-winning Black and gender non-binary authors, which just means there’s more to love in this collection centred around Black girls.
