How to Clean Your Teen’s Period Underwear

(Spoiler: It’s way easier than you think.) If you’re wondering how to properly wash your teen’s period underwear, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get, and the good news is, it’s actually really simple. Period underwear is designed to handle what it absorbs, so there’s no need to stress about tossing it in with the rest of the laundry.

The Basics

Everyone wears their period underwear differently, but it all ends up in the same place, the laundry basket, holding on to period blood just like it’s designed to. If the idea of tossing them in with your teen’s other clothes makes you pause, don’t worry. Washing period underwear is no different than washing any other piece of clothing.

When you use laundry detergent (a mild one works best), it helps lift and separate any absorbed blood from the fabric. During the wash, that dirty water drains out and refills with clean water, leaving everything fresh and clean. The same science that gets sweat and dirt out of gym clothes works just as well for period underwear.

Fun fact: Kt by Knix underwear is moisture-wicking, which means it’s designed to stay dry and comfortable, whether they’re dealing with a period or just a little extra sweat.

Optional Pre-Rinse

If your teen feels more comfortable, they can rinse their underwear in cold water and lightly rub the gusset before tossing it in the machine. Totally optional, but it can give a little extra peace of mind.

Washing Tips to Make Them Last

1. Always wash in cold water.
Heat can damage the elastic and shorten the life of the fabric. To keep that perfect fit, choose a cold wash cycle. No need to hand wash or set your machine to “delicate”, Kt period underwear is built to last through up to 50 washes. Just avoid fabric softener and stick with a mild detergent.

2. Use a mesh laundry bag.
Mesh bags help protect delicates during the wash (and make them easier to find when transferring to the dryer). A small step that makes a big difference.

3. Skip the dryer — except for a few styles.
For most Kt by Knix period underwear, air drying is the way to go. High heat can break down the absorbent fibers and alter the fit. Instead, lay them flat or hang them up to dry, they’ll last much longer this way.

The only exceptions? Our Super Leakproof and Cotton Modal Super Leakproof styles, which can be tumble-dried on low heat.

And that’s it, really! Once you know the steps, washing your teen’s period underwear is just another part of the laundry routine.
