🩸The Staircase of Screams 🩸
At 16, I was one last of my friends to get my period. Then, while climbing around the spiral staircase—what did I hear? A shriek and my name. That was the first—and last—time I wore my velour, white Juicy couture tracksuit. Gutted.

🩸Seeing Red 🩸
Remember those pad commercials with that bright blue liquid? Those were never explained to me. So when I looked in the toilet and saw blood for the first time, you can imagine my fear and maybe even hear the scream: “MOM!!!!!” It shouldn’t have been a horror story, but it was. And that’s exactly why my daughter already knows the reality of what’s to come.

🩸The Tampon from Hell(th) Class🩸
My grade-school health teacher decided it was a good idea to teach us how a tampon worked by dipping it in her mug of coffee. The image of a dangling, fully expanded super tampon dripping with brown liquid is one that will haunt me for life.

🩸Blood Island🩸
“I was 11 when I got my first period. It happened at a picnic on Toronto Island when I was with my ENTIRE extended family—everyone except my mom. I remember being in a state of panic all day not knowing what was going on. I lined my bathing suit with toilet paper, hoping I wasn’t about to die. As soon as I saw my mom I started sobbing uncontrollably and tried to explain what happened. I had no idea what periods were before that day!
