Your First Period: 4 Things I wish I knew Before Getting My Period
If you're worried about your first period, we get it. One minute you're curious about what it'll be like, and the next you're totally freaked out. Questions start piling up "What if it happens at school?" "What if I leak?" "What am I even supposed to do?" All of that is totally normal.
Before we get into the details, let's define a period.
A period is a natural, healthy, and manageable fact of life, and a sign that your body is growing up. About once a month, your body releases a small amount of blood through your vagina for a few days (usually 3-7 days).
A lot of people get their first period around age 12, but some get it earlier, and some get it later. There is no “normal” age. Your body is not “behind” or “ahead.” it is just on its own schedule.

Don’t Panic. It Is Just Your Period.
Your first period can feel scary because you cannot know the exact day it will happen or exactly what it will feel like for you. But getting your period is completely normal. You aren’t alone and pretty soon managing your period will be part of your daily routine and as simple as tying shoes.

No Two Periods are the Same
Everyone's first period is different, which is annoying but true. It might start as just a few spots of brown or red blood in your underwear, or it could be a heavier flow right away. It may last only 3 days, or more than 7. Your first few periods might be totally random, not showing up every month like clockwork, no matter what everyone says.
You might get cramps in your lower stomach or back. You might feel tired, bloated, emotional, annoyed, hungry, or completely normal, maybe even all of those in the same day. It sounds like a lot, but over time you'll learn what's normal for your body. And if something ever feels really painful or just not okay, it's always fine to ask for help.

Your Period’s BFF
Leakproof underwear is your period’s BFF (especially by Kt by Knix). It’s one of those things we wish more people knew about sooner. It looks and feels like regular underwear, but it has built-in layers that help absorb period blood and protect your clothes. It's wild how thin the underwear is because it holds so much. It can hold all different flow levels too!

4. It does not hurt to be prepared
The easiest way to stop stressing about your period? Build yourself a small first-period kit and keep it wherever you need it most, your backpack, locker, sports bag, or the bathroom at home. That way, you're never caught off guard.

The Bottom Line
Getting your first period can honestly feel pretty stressful, especially if you do not know exactly what to expect. But it is also something a lot of people go through, and it gets way less scary once you have a better idea of what is happening and what can help. Leakproof underwear can be an amazing option because it helps you feel more prepared and less worried about leaks, especially if your period shows up when you are not expecting it.
At first, periods can feel like a lot, but after a while, you start figuring out what works best for you. The most important thing is knowing that you are not alone, you have options, and you are going to be okay.
No matter where your period catches up with you, Kt by Knix has you covered:
